What is an infrared sauna? How does an infrared sauna work? IR saunas work by heating the body in the same was as the sun, but without any harmful UV rays. The spectrum of light in the sauna is absorbed into the skin and improves blood flow in deep tissue. This promotes healing of microtraumas, or tiny tears in muscle tissues. ²
Is an Infrared Sauna Safe?
Yes, and it is safe enough for a newborn baby. Hospitals use infrared to keep babies warm. NASA uses it as a heating system for astronauts to keep them warm while not overheating (or steaming) the spacecraft. Dr. Oz spoke of the safety and benefits of infrared saunas on Oprah in 2009, stating that people who use it twice per week can significantly reduce their blood pressure. ¹
Can it Help Me Lose Weight?
Infrared saunas produce results similar to actual exercise. This includes an elevated heart rate that is maintained up to 30 minutes after the sauna. Some experts believe that this helps with calorie burn and weight loss since the infrared light actually goes into the skin and warms it at a cellular level. But the experts are divided on this issue: the weight loss may come from the infrared spectrum, or from exercise. So how does an infrared sauna work to help lose weight? People who use saunas often do so after exercise to help them recover from a strenuous workout. Furthermore, having a better recovery keeps them working out harder with less chances of an injury.
When should I do it?
Infrared sauna is good at any time for people who are in good health. Most people like to do it after a hard workout to help heal their muscles so they aren’t so sore the next day. The extra sweating helps to remove any toxins that might be harmful to your skin. If you are someone who likes to be warm it really helps to reduce stress and comfort you after a long day.
